Relationship with Technology

Technology is no doubt the most efficient and effective achievement that is used in our everyday life. Technology is crazy and allows almost everything we want to be right in front of us with a touch of a button. There are obviously a lot of positive things about technology. We can use technology to connect with people that we can’t be with at all times. We use social media and other internet sources to share moments of our life and share significant events. With technology, music and film and many other forms of art can be shared worldwide which is absolutely amazing. Technology allows us to find information on things in an easy way and also allows us to be educated on so many different concepts just by a quick search on google or a youtube video.

Although technology has an extreme amount of positive details, it is easy to overlook the negative impacts that it could have on people. Taking a deeper look into technology, it can get really sad to see the negatives. First off, information that can be found on the internet can be misleading or unreliable. Also, unfortunately with all the new technology in the world, people get caught up and only value technology. People tend to forget about real and natural things in the world. We as a whole look through our phones instead of our own eyes in certain events which is heartbreaking. Sometimes, people rely on their phones instead of real human interaction or they even find it easier to hold conversation looking through a screen rather than in real life.

Speaking in terms of social media specifically, that is another thing that has so many great assets and interactions. However, there is a large dark side of social media. With social media, things like cyberbullying, revenge porn and ghosting have come to be. Cyberbullying is an awful thing that has become so common in recent generations. Whether it’s using an anonymous account or not even, people find it extremely easy to judge and go after others because they're behind a screen- they believe they can say whatever nasty comments they want to people without direct consequences. Along with cyberbullying, social media also creates a place of stereotypes and expectations. When scrolling through instagram, people can look at others and if they don’t look like the skinny models, filters or edits, they tear themselves down as if they aren’t good enough because they aren’t the “ideal” looking person they see on instagram. Social media is also a place where people can come off as the happiest person alive, but you never truly know what each person is facing in life. It’s almost like a show that people are putting on. Cyberbullying and other negative aspects of social media has led to very devastating statistics. After social media, youth suicide rates raised in the US. Technology for sure has a downside too.

As far as my personal relationship with technology, I definitely use social media a good amount, but the “relationship” is healthy. I always try to take breaks from my phone and there are certain times where I don’t need it at all. It’s important to stay in the moment and try not to get caught up in technology. Technology has been a super important thing in my life and I have learned a lot from technology whether it’s online classes, photography or even catching up with people. But sometimes I fall into the negative traps of technology and I do tend to compare myself to lifestyles and people that I see on social media. I feel like everyone does but I try to get myself out of that negative mindset because everyone is different and it’s super draining to always be comparing yourself to others.

Technology is an advanced and amazing invention that keeps expanding in so many ways each and every day. It’s important to maintain a healthy “relationship” with technology and use it in ways that benefit us without getting too caught up.
