Online Presence

When thinking of my online presence, there are a lot of questions and concerns that come into play. Social Media right now is obviously the largest platform for communication. There are tons of apps and sites that are available to our generation which can be a really cool thing but also a really scary thing too. Speaking on my online presence specifically, I use a few social media sites everyday including snapchat, instagram and twitter. When using instagram, I post pictures with my friends and fun experiences that I have had in my life. I also use instagram to repost images that I find inspiring or meaningful. When using snapchat, I am able to keep in touch with all of my friends with images of each other and post any little fun things that are happening in the moment. Twitter is another site I enjoy to look at what other people are talking about, funny stories that people share  or even updates with news events. On the outside, it is easy to say that social media is a just a fun and enjoyable source of communication and entertainment. However, looking deeper into it, there are concerns that become present with social media as a whole.

If someone were to view my profile, they would see big smiles and special moments. We put our happiest moments on social media. But the thing is, we don’t actually know a person based on their social media and a lot of people tend to forget that and lots of stereotypes can surface with social media sites being used and many things can be assumed about a person based on one visit to their profile. We put our greatest moments or greatest pictures on these sites to capture the best image of ourselves and that is all people see. With social media, something that happens is comparisons. People tend to compare their lives to others that they see on social media. This goes back to looks, money and lifestyle overall. With these comparisons, it can totally have a negative effect on certain people that can cause them to feel depressed, lonely or left out.

Another thing with social media that can raise many concerns in the privacy factor. Many social media sites require you to give your phone number and email for login purposes and your information is given to the site. Privacy also comes in regarding what people set their account to. Certain apps allow you to keep your profile private and you are able to choose who views it, but some other apps do not have that choice. There are obvious dangers in this as people can get hold of information about your life that you don’t want them. Another danger is the permanence of social media content. What you put online stays online and many businesses search uo possible hires on social media to see if they are doing the right thing. So, if something is posted that your job interest sees and doesn’t like, it could cost you the job and opportunity.
In the end, I think social media is a key way to communicate with others and provides a lot of awesome opportunities and interactions but it is important to use your social media in the safest way possible and always be aware of what is going on with your accounts personally.
